Movistar, a multinational cell phone company, was recently presented with Uruguay’s highest award for excellence in advertising. The Golden Bell Award (Campana del Oro) was presented to Movistar at a ceremony held on Nov. 15 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The “Lost in Montevideo” commercial was the major advertising campaign of the  year for the company, which serves 22 million customers in Spain and South America.

The Golden Bell Award is comparable to America’s Clio Awards, which recognize excellence in American advertising.

A team of eight Uruguayans spent a week in Montevideo, and a seven-person film crew, led by Twin Cities based Director of Photography Steven Speers, was hired to film the commercial.

The three-minute commercial chronicled the adventures of a young man from rural Uruguay who sets out to visit the big city of Montevideo, Uruguay, but unexpectedly ends up in Montevideo, Minnesota.

The filming took place on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, at various locations in Montevideo. Locations included Topper’s Bar and Grill, Valentino’s American Restaurant, Krista Landmark’s photography studio, the high school, main street, and residential areas throughout the city.

More than 60 people volunteered to take part in the filming of the commercial. Local actors featured in the commercial were: Jeff Mills, Dennis Larson, Patrick Moore, Thomas Gee-Hoover, Riley Emery, Nikki Erickson, and Kevin Roth (all from Montevideo), Sammy Larson of Clarkfield, Dana Johnson of Appleton, and Brian Dempcy and Adam Conroy of Madison.
