Long-time math teacher and coach Jeff Halbmaier has been named Montevideo’s Teacher of the Year.

“I am very honored, very humbled to be chosen 2017 Teacher of the Year,” said Halbmaier.

Halbmaier grew up in Winnebago and graduated from high school there in 1977. He spent four years at Bemidji State University, majoring in elementary education with concentrations in math and physical education. He earned his coaching certificate at BSU and his master’s from Southwest Minnesota  State University in 1998.

His first teaching job was in Cosmos, where he taught third grade and fifth grade.  He was also the head boys basketball  coach and the junior high football coach. He spent three years in Cosmos before coming to Montevideo.

“I have spent 32 years in the middle school setting teaching sixth grade math. Once enrollment and budget cuts hit and MMS went from five section grade levels to four sections, teaching sixth grade reading was added to my schedule,” said Halbmaier.

Until two years ago, Halbmaier spent every year since graduating from high school coaching a sport at one level or another, starting with coaching summer rec in Winnebago,

He has coached baseball, football, and softball in Montevideo at virtually all levels from community rec, traveling teams, junior high, B-squad, JV, to head boys basketball coach.

“ I figure it has been at least 30 years that I have coached,” said Halbmaier.
