On July 9, 2017, Refugio “Kooky” Schorn, 21, of Renville was arrested in connection with an arson incident that took place at a duplex at 401/403 Canyon Avenue in Montevideo.

Montevideo dispatch had received a call from Schorn’s mother, Rachel Castillo, who, according to the police report, told dispatch  that her son was “really messed up and needed to be found by law enforcement before he hurts someone or himself.”

Castillo also informed officers that her son had recently posted bail in Renville County and was  on house arrest, but he had cut off his bracelet and took off.

Officers had been looking for Schorn earlier as several suspicious person reports came in about a man wearing a ski mask and riding a bicycle. The man on the bicycle had been identified as Schorn.

As officers made their way to Castillo’s residence, an officer was flagged down by a citizen who told them that Schorn was in the area of South 4th  St. and Canyon Ave.

Upon arrival at 401/403 Canyon Ave., the officer noticed a number of people standing outside and observed an individual throwing water on the side of the house as there was a small fire burning.
