A 4-H Engineer It! Challenge Workshop was held on Saturday, October 12, 2017. Hosted by Chippewa County 4-H at the Montevideo Public Library, eight youth spent three and a half hours being engineers for multiple challenges.

After reviewing simple machines and the engineering design process, the youth, in two teams, tackled their first challenge. Having foam pipe insulation, tape and other “junk drawer essentials”, the teams had to design a ski slope type jump in which the marble landed in a cup without bouncing off the floor. Each team met the challenge with success and rounds of cheers before moving on to the next steps. They were then challenged to produce the same result while adding a valley to their slope, then a loop and finally a gap to jump over. The youth trialed and designed several different options before finding which design worked to meet the challenge. Even then, the teams were inspired to improve their builds to increase the efficiency.
