Thirty years is a long time for any business to remain in business, but that is exactly how long Topper’s Bar and Grill has been around. During the past 30 years, a lot of restaurants have come and gone in Montevideo, but Topper’s is still going strong.

Steve Frommel, also known as “Topper” ever since he was a kid, is a native Montevidean. Back in 1987, he had reached a crossroads in his life. He had been working for the Holiday Inn in Alexandria for a number of years, and had received a job offer from a Holiday Inn in Florida. “I was basically still a kid. I was 27 years old at the time and unsure about what I wanted to do,” he said.

While visiting his parents in Montevideo, he explored the possibility of owning his own business. “At the time, The Golden Spike in downtown Montevideo was for sale, but it wasn’t right for me,” Frommel said.

A banker friend of his mentioned that he knew of a property that was for sale and would make a good investment property. The building had been empty for a number of years, but during its long history, it had housed Zaiser Dairy, a  beer distribution warehouse, a pool hall, and a Mexican restaurant among others.
