A civil lawsuit has been filed in the Eighth Judicial District Court in Chippewa County over the matter of a stolen gravestone. Siblings Cal Albrecht and Deb Grussing of Montevideo, Jasen Albrecht of Huron, SD, and Lane Albrecht of Willmar, filed the civil suit seeking to return the gravestone (which they had purchased) to the site of their mother’s grave.

The defendants, as named in the filing, are John W. Albrecht, Sr., and John D. Albrecht, Jr., both of Montevideo.

According to the factual background of the summons, following the death of Sandra Albrecht, wife of John Albrecht, Sr., and mother to the plaintiffs, her body was interred in a plot at Sunset Cemetery in Montevideo. The plot was purchased by Albrecht, Sr.

According to the plaintiffs (as stated in the factual background of the summons), the defendant John W. Albrecht “expressly and implicitly, through verbal conversations and through actions authorized the Plaintiffs to purchase the gravestone. On three separate occasions, Plaintiffs expressed through Everett Bain that they would offer to place a gravestone on the grave plot owned by Defendant John W. Albrecht for the purpose of memorializing and mourning Sandra Albrecht, Plaintiffs’ mother. In each and every instance, John W. Albrecht exclaimed acceptance, appreciation, and thankfulness to Everett Bain for Plaintiff’s offer to cover the costs of the burial and the cost of a gravestone.”

Wing-Bain Funeral Home then placed the stone at the cemetery.
