Kristin DeJong, 16, of Montevideo, has faced challenges in her young life that many people would find difficult, but she has faced those challenges with a surprising grace, optimism, and hope that go beyond her years. Indeed, DeJong’s story has been an  inspiration for anyone who has heard it.

When DeJong was five years old, she lost her leg in a lawn mower accident. The accident took place in August, and by October she was walking with a new prosthetic.

DeJong started to dance when she was four, and has avidly continued with athletics since then. She has been involved in volleyball since fifth grade, and has also been involved in softball in previous years.

In the summertime, she likes to go swimming and play tennis recreationally. In addition to being a well-rounded athlete, DeJong also loves to paint and is a very artistic individual.

DeJong’s prosthetic has affected her life in some ways, but she doesn’t feel negatively about it.
