Several law enforcement agencies, along with the West Central SWAT Team, responded to a possible hostage incident in Appleton on Tuesday afternoon. The situation turned into an armed standoff with William Steven Synowczynski, 37, of Appleton. Synowczynski was involved in a similar incident in July of 2017.

Officers were called to the scene in Appleton on Tuesday on a report that Synowczynski had threatened the lives of family members. He also threatened to kill officers if they approached a fish house which he had barricaded himself into.

Synowczynski had been on conditional release after the standoff in July. In that case, he fled from a drunk driving stop, assaulted the pursuing officer, and barricaded himself in his home.

SWAT apprehended Synowczynski in that incident after forcibly entering the home and arresting him after he fell while coming down the stairs with a loaded shotgun.

Synowczynski is facing charges of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and fourth-degree assault of a police officer stemming from that incident.

Charges are pending in the current incident.

Other law enforcement agencies participating in the incident on Tuesday were the Swift County Sheriff’s Dept., Lac qui Parle County Sheriff’s Dept., police from Appleton and Benson, officers from the Minnesota DNR and the Minnesota State Patrol.
