The Montevideo Cub Scout Pack held their annual Pinewood Derby on Sat., Feb. 24. Despite the weather, there was a big turnout of scouts and their families, with much excitement in the air as the boys were eager to see how their cars would fare.

The boys crafted their cars out of blocks of wood. Each car was designed to look “cool” and be raced down a steep incline, where its speed could reach over 200 scale mph. The cars were raced a total of six times in alternating lanes on the racetrack, and the car with the fastest average time was the winner.

In addition to a derby, the boys also had an opportunity to make boats from a kit for the annual Raingutter Regatta. The event tests an individual’s skill and their ability to use their own air power to sail their boat down the channel the fastest. The event is a double elimination race, and it was fun for the boys to see an underdog comeback from the loser’s bracket to claim victory.
