Five students from the Minnesota Valley Area Learning Center in Montevideo traveled to Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park on Tuesday, March 20, to participate in the MAAP STARS Northwest Metro Regional Conference. MAAP stands for Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs, and STARS stands for Success, Teamwork, Achievement, Recognition, and Self-esteem.

ALC students attending the conference were Skylar Selchert, Tori Kocher, Logan Conroy, Victoria Rivera, and Hannah Winters. Each of the students had the opportunity to participate in any of four events.

Tori Kocher and Skylar Selchert participated in Public Speaking. Each presented a three to seven minute speech about their educational journey or about an issue affecting their state or region.

Students participating in Team Management Decision Making were given a work related problem and had 25 minutes to come up with at least three different solutions while looking at the pros and cons of those. They then presented their information to the judges.

Victoria Rivera participated in Employment Interview. She chose from a list of entry level positions, completed an application, then interviewed for the position.

Another team event was Life Smarts. This event was a game style event where three teams competed against each other to answer questions related to health and safety, personal finance, environment, and technology. There are three rounds of play with the highest score at the end being the winner. Monte’s ALC team placed third out of eight teams in this event.

The Northwest Metro Regional Conference was the perfect way to prepare for the upcoming MAAP STARS Spring Events Conference. ALC teacher Emily Dirksen said: “Our students did really well! We now have the feedback from the judges, so we can use this to make our events even better for the big competition coming up in just a couple of weeks.”
