On April 12 and 13, six students from the MN Valley ALC competed at the state MAAP (Minnesota Association of Alternative Programs) STARS (Success, Teamwork, Achievement, Recognition and Self-esteem) program at the Double Tree Hotel in Bloomington.

Nearly 300 students from 30 different schools across the state competed in about 15 competitive and demonstrative events, both as individuals and as teams designed to help students focus on their futures.

Event placement is based on the highest scorer in the event. 90 percent and above receive a gold ribbon, 80 percent receives silver and 70 percent receives bronze. Places are determined after the preliminary event, although some events have semi-finals or finals. Final placement is then determined and the top three in team events receive plaques and individual medals, and the top eight in individual events receive plaques and medals.
