Employees of SL Montevideo Technology, Inc., were notified last Wednesday that the long-time local manufacturer would be shutting its doors for good this fall.

A statement released to the press by Evan Pondel of Pondel/Wilkinson Inc., acknowledged that a decision had been made to close the Montevideo facility, resulting in the termination of many of its employees.

The statement read, in part, “The business decision, which we believe will help make MTI an even stronger company, was extremely difficult. It followed a comprehensive business review that considered cost structure and our competitive position in the marketplace, along with the ability to gradually shift our manufacturing capacity at other MTI facilities.”

The closure affects approximately 110 employees, a lot of them having worked many years for the company. The closure, employee layoffs, and wind-down process will take place over the course of the next six months.

Pondel stated that the company is ready to do all it can to help the employees who are losing their jobs. “MTI will provide help for employees during the transition, including engaging an outplacement firm to assist and prepare employees as they transition. MTI will also provide severance packages, based on length of service, and will offer relocation and transfer opportunities to Kenosha, Wisconsin, for some employees where openings exist.”
