One person is dead, and another seriously wounded after a shooting incident at 103 S. 4th St. in Montevideo on Tuesday.

Chippewa County Dispatch began receiving 911 calls about shots fired at the residence at approximately 11:52 a.m. Officers en route to the scene were informed that at least one person had been shot.

Location of the incident

Upon arrival officers found Angela Haugerud, 41, of Montevideo, lying on the front porch of the home bleeding from  gun shot wounds to her back and the back of one leg.

Officers initially thought she had been wounded in the head due to a large amount of bleeding, but she had fallen and hit her head as she attempted to flee the home.

Officers then proceeded to conduct a careful and thorough search of the residence and discovered the body of David Schwartz, 55, of Foley. Schwartz was deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

Haugerud was conscious and speaking with officers before being transported to the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital where she was stabilized and later flown to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Schwartz’s body was sent to the Anoka County Medical Examiner’s Office to be examined in an autopsy.

According to Montevideo Chief of Police Adam Christopher, Schwartz had not been in Montevideo for very long. “He recently moved to Montevideo from Foley and had been living in a trailer at Northdale Trailer Park.”

Christopher said that Haugerud and Schwartz had been dating, but that they were no longer seeing each other.

“Schwartz did have an Order For Protection in place against him from his ex-wife in Foley, and it appears he has a criminal history,” said Christopher.

Haugerud underwent surgery at HCMC on Tuesday evening, and is reportedly in stable condition and recovering from her injuries.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Montevideo Police Department. The MPD was assisted at the scene by the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, the Minnesota BCA, and the Minnesota State Patrol.
