Summer vacation came to an end with a flurry of activity this week at the new kindergarten classroom at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The room, located in the Christian Growth Center at the church, has been under construction since early July in preparation for the 14 children who are registered.
The Montevideo School Board had a lot to discuss at a special meeting Monday night as members worked to finalize a list of new belief statements and set related goals for the district, review policy changes for the upcoming school year, and discuss contract negotiations with office personnel, educational assistants, and administrators.
Filing for local elections closed Tuesday across Minnesota, setting the stage for the Nov. 2 general election.
With most of its summer building and repair projects complete, the Montevideo School District is nearly prepared for the new school year. Projects include the installation of a new phone system, a card access system, and upkeep repairs on the existing school buildings.

The filing window for municipal and school board elections in which a primary is not held will open Aug. 3 and continue until Aug. 17. Candidates who file but change their minds about running for office will have until no later than 5 p.m. Aug. 19 to withdraw, according to information provided by the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office.
The Montevideo Board of Education started the work week early Monday morning with a special year-end meeting that began at 7 a.m.
Unwilling to accept cuts made by the Montevideo School Board this year to the high school instrumental and elementary/middle school vocal music programs, the Montevideo Music Boosters are attempting to raise approximately $50,000 for each of the next five years to reverse the reductions.
Dr. Luther Heller, superintendent of Montevideo schools, is confident the school district will be able to operate the next two school years with a balanced budget without asking voters to approve a new operating levy.

The sonorous strains of Sir Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” will fill the senior high school gymnasium Sunday as the graduating Class of 2010 files into the gym for the 125th annual commencement ceremony at Montevideo.
The annual Montevideo Scholarship Tea would not be complete without scholarship fund coordinator Darwin TeBeest reminding all in attendance that he loves to give away other people’s money.

To remind Montevideo Senior High School students of the dangers of inattentive or impaired driving, especially with prom coming up this Saturday, a mock car crash was staged Wednesday morning at the Chippewa County Fairgrounds. High school students played roles as those injured and killed in the simulated accident. Local emergency responders, law enforcement authorities, and others participated in the exercise. Playground equipment is a common sight at Ramsey and Sanford Elementary schools, but not at Montevideo Middle School. The lack of such equipment is not because there is no need, but because there is not enough money.
