People in and around Montevideo who are looking for an opportunity to get involved in an activity, or are simply looking for fresh musical entertainment are in for a treat. The Oasis, a community choir serving the Montevideo area, began rehearsal Oct. 2 and is still looking for interested singers.
The Oasis meets Sunday nights from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the Montevideo Middle School choir room. Singers high school age and older are encouraged to join.
Presently the group’s membership features a balance between high school students and older men and women who live in and around Montevideo.
“We are looking forward to having everyone that wants to be a part of a welcoming, safe, and comfortable place to sing,” said director Adam Christie. “We also pride ourselves in making the highest quality of music that we can.”
As for what kind of music The Oasis will perform, fans and singers can expect variety.
“We sing music ranging from contemporary, pop, country, classical, spiritual and gospel, traditional, and even original compositions for our group specifically,” said Christie.
Directing this community choir is an extension of Christie’s day job. He teaches music at the Clarkfield Area Charter School.
Prior to arriving in the Montevideo area, Christie studied choir at Concordia College in Moorhead. There he served as a section leader and assistant conductor as well as conductor for a choir he started that featured 30 select singers.
Christie, who originally hails from Billings, Mont., said of his move to flat, tree-starved western Minnesota, “I dearly miss the mountains and scenery. However, this community is truly special and worth the trade off.”
When he’s not conducting the choir or teaching at Clarkfield Charter, Christie can often be found substitute teaching at Montevideo or surrounding schools. He also works evenings at Walmart and enjoys composing choral music when he can fit it in his schedule.
As for The Oasis, the group is still putting together a schedule of its own. The plan now is to perform at various community events such as parades, church services, celebrations and holiday events.
The members are preparing a Christmas concert for early December.
People wanting more details about that or any performance are encouraged to check out their choir Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheOasisUpdate
Whether a person is looking to join the group or just wants to watch an upcoming performance, Christie and The Oasis plan to emphasize the “community” in community choir.
“The Oasis has one purpose and one goal. The mission of The Oasis is to promote wholeness through community and song,” Christie said.
