Montevideo Community Education Director Doug Spray has become only the 11th person to receive the Minnesota Community Education Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
Spray was honored at the annual MCEA Leadership Day Luncheon in St. Cloud Jan. 21.
“It was something I didn’t expect,” said Spray.
Spray has been Montevideo’s Community Education director since Aug. 1, 1974, when he succeeded Virg Christianson.
In 2003 he was named Minnesota Community Education Director of the Year, and in 2008 he received the organization’s President’s Award.
Spray has served three two-year terms on the state Community Education board of directors. He was the board’s president in 2001.
In 2007 Spray chaired the national Community Education conference in Minneapolis.
One of the achievements Spray is most proud of during his career in Community Education is helping secure legislative funding for after-school programs for children.
Spray is now semiretired. “My plans are to fade out of this office at the end of the summer,” he said.
