The Southwest Minnesota Arts & Humanities Council announces their upcoming gallery exhibit featuring the works of abstract artist, Erik Gran. This exhibit opens April 7, 2011.

Although he has lived on both coasts and shown his work internationally, Erik Gran creates large abstract artworks in his Silver Lake studio. Influences on his art are drawn from life, memories, nature and observation.

Many of Gran's abstract works are done freely on canvas and wood panel, resulting in a jazz-like structure. Others are more geometric, and utilize preliminary sketches. Around 1990 he began to pursue people and other figurative elements. "I would like to paint a little different from that which has been done before," commented Gran. "I do not want to just repeat what has already been done, although I am very interested in art history and in the work of other artists."

The public is invited to visit the SMAHC art gallery which will host Gran's art from April 7 through July 1, 2011. Join SMAHC for an opening reception from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM on April 7, 2011. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM and is located in Suite 600, 1210 East College Drive, Marshall. Enter through the glass door on the east side of the building.

As a collaborative effort, SMAHC and the Marshall Area Fine Arts Council (MAFAC) will be hosting opening receptions for their respective galleries on the same night, April 7 - both from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. MAFAC will be exhibiting "High School Arts Stars" where senior high students from the towns of Marshall, Tracy, Cottonwood and Minneota will have the opportunity to share their artwork.

This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
