My Two Cents

My favorite section of the newspaper is the Opinion Page, as I like to see what is on the minds of community members. There are times when I disagree with a perspective, but I appreciate the opportunity for expression....

It is unfortunate that our President labels important sources of information as the “fake news media” and an ”enemy of the people.” I find the local newspaper, Pioneer TV,  and Minnesota Public Radio to be important sources of hope for their in-depth reporting. Our local radio station keeps us well informed of local events.

Thank you Mike Milbrandt for your “My Two Cents” column, reporting from a base of research, courage and wisdom in speaking truth to power.

Our President earns criticism when he says things that our parents would never have allowed spoken in their presence. Most of us were taught to be kind, to show love and respect for everyone. Is it okay to have a President that shows verbal disdain for foreigners, for those who are different from himself, or even disagree with him? It is right that commentaries address these behaviors. Our children view the President’s words and actions daily on their home tv’s.

It has always been wrong  to take children away from loving parents who are seeking safety for themselves and their children. We have a broken immigration system that needs reform. There are heartbreaking stories of even long established immigrants who are being sent to a country they left years ago, leaving jobs, homes, and families in this country. To make America great is to have a heart  filled with compassion for our neighbors.

Thank you Mike for reporting on the big issues that affect our residents, like the shortage of  adequate and affordable housing. I look forward to reading more analysis of our world at the local and national level, as that is what makes the Montevideo American News a valuable source of information.

Vacation 2018

What’s your vacation done for you? Did you take one? Can’t have an experience without some planning and the actual experience of giving it some real effort. Kids can make the work worthwhile too. They adapt very well once underway. Too many “are we there yet’s” could be a deterrant of ever trying this again. The location, the sought after experience, how it’s done - tenting, camper, hotel-motel, resort, and all the others have big affects on the final outcome. This is about it.

The state fair begins on August 24, the Labor Day is upon us. All schools start 8/27 or 9/4 it seems, then it can be too late unless you go mid-Oct. That’s a good time too.

Our experience has ranged from open under the stars, to tenting, pick up tenting to travel trailer. We’re now so old and decrepit that we only do motels. No more under the stars!

We hope you took the time and either have or have had a great experience. There’s always time if you can gather up the troops and make an event or location work for you. Please always be careful with your fire and we hope safety is always included. S’mores anyone?
