Speaking truth
It was astonishing to read the opinions of a Lt. Colonel in the newspaper last week, especially when it involved openly and publicly chastising a superior officer for expressing his opinions. If I get this right, it is Lt. Col Sachariason’s opinion that Gen. McChrystal displayed “arrogance,” “pride” and a “poor attitude” when he failed to keep his opinions to himself.

Obviously, the General’s opinion would have been acceptable if it had been gushing with praise for the administration. My opinion is that he was ousted for speaking the truth.

Gratitude
I wish to express gratitude to the following individuals, and their families who support them while they volunteer their time. Without hesitation, the following youth and adults volunteered their time to broaden children’s learning experiences through literacy efforts while others played an essential role in enriching childhood experiences and strengthening families’ projects. Margret and Reagan Diggins; Kris and Ellie Christopherson; Kerry Jasperson; Sue Luebke; Sandy Anderson; Taylor Patton; Sophia and Julie Mahlum; Bailie Cobb; Melissa DeBeer; Nicole Thissen; Amy Ackman; Dale Spaeth; Seth McGonigle; Missy, Kami and Alise Ochsendorf; Countryside Public Health staff Tera Gades, Laura Mahlum and Kris Boike; Prairie Five Nutrition Program staff; and Prairie Five CAC staff Laurie Hendrickson, Gail Jerve, Nora Guerra, Kathy Sundstedt, Marge, Kayla and Katherine Knudson, Tina and Kamren Saue, Lori and Alyssa Formo and Lisa Sederstrom.

I also wish to extend sincere appreciation to the following community partners that have either donated services, facility space or funding to collaboratively support the aforementioned early literacy efforts and strengthening families’ initiatives: Southwest Initiative Foundation; Montevideo Early Childhood Initiative; Countryside Public Health; Kinder Kare; Java River; Montevideo Public Library; and Prairie Five Community Action Council. The success of these projects simply could not have been achieved without your contributions.

Relaying thanks
Thank you to all who donated to The Chippewa County Relay For Life Walk that was held May 14 and 15 at Smith Park in Montevideo. To each individual, family and business, you made a difference! We made our county-wide goal for this year by raising $41,000! These generous donations will bring needed funds for The American Cancer Society’s research, treatment and services for cancer patients. Relay For Life also brings much needed awareness of the importance to keep funding this vital organization. This is your American Cancer Society — Celebrate! Remember! Fight Back!

Cemetery procedures?
I am writing in regard to the cemetery, Terrace Lawn and Gardens. I used to brag about how beautiful it used to be, to my friends and relatives, and last year and this year everything was taken off the graves by the second week of June. I would like to know why.

My mother passed away in 1984, and I always put flowers out for Mother’s Day, and my father would add to the bougquet on Memorial Day. Then they would stay in the vase until after Labor Day.

I do realize that it is a lot to mow, but that is the reason the vases are built right into the stones.
