Remember what Memorial Day is about
As Memorial Day weekend approaches, I would like to remind everyone to remember veterans that have served and are serving our country, especially those who have lost their lives doing so.
In addition, be aware that Montevideo/YME Hwy 212 Marching Band will be leaving today to march in the Washington, D.C. Memorial Day Parade. The Hwy 212 Marching Band is the only band from Minnesota that was accepted to be in this parade. Therefore, the cities of Montevideo and Granite Falls have been elevated to a national level thanks to the efforts of band directors Ronald Stary in Montevideo, and Nicole Boelter at YME.
This also would not be possible without the strong musical background that the students received from the music departments of Montevideo and YME schools.
The Montevideo Veterans Observance on Memorial Day at Sunset Cemetery by the American Legion will be even more meaningful with the combined efforts of the Montevideo Middle School band students under Lee Varpness, high school band students, the Montevideo Community Band, and vocal selections from students of Dan Hampton.
As a child growing up in a military family with both parents Air Force veterans (mother World War II; father Vietnam) I understand the importance of Memorial Day and would think the community would be especially mindful this year with the recent return of our troops from Iraq.
I would also like to remind the people of Montevideo that the Montevideo school music department teaches students the importance of these holidays through active participation in the local and national observances of Memorial Day as well as other community events. Montevideo businesses and the people of Montevideo should, in turn, show their spirit of community by supporting the music program and actively working to restore the budget cuts made to the department this year so they may continue to enjoy the high quality music the students present and the students can contribute their talents in remembrance of this upcoming holiday and future community events.

Something to think about …
What is wrong with this situation? We have the president of Mexico whining to congress about how we should not enforce our own immigration laws because they are “unfair.”
At the same time we have Polaris closing a plant in Wisconsin, that employs 500 plus people to move the factory to … Mexico! There they can pay someone a dollar an hour to do the job of someone in the U.S.A.
Something to think about!

Bias against Watson council
The staff writer reporting this news should get the facts straight and get the current names of council members before putting article in the paper. There seems to be a definite bias against Watson city government. But then I guess drama and controversy is what sells more papers.
