The Montevideo VFW Junior Legion baseball season came to an end this past weekend as they participated in the opening round of the state tournament in Bird Island.

The Montevideo VFW Junior Legion baseball season came to an end this past weekend as they participated in the opening round of the state tournament in Bird Island.

Monte was defeated in their first game on Friday by Holy Family Catholic by a score of  16-6. Despite the lopsided final score, the game was close through the first five innings as Holy Family Catholic led by a score of 8-6 at the end of the fifth.

Holy Family Catholic added four runs in their half of the sixth, then four more in the seventh to secure the win.

Jackson Snell and Seth Kuno each had two hits for Montevideo in the game, while Tyler Blue, Noah Buseman, Chase Korte, Matt Fragodt, Max Carruth, Cade Weber, and James Golden each had a hit.

On Saturday, Monte­video played Ottertail Central in the consolation bracket and came out on top with a 5-4 victory in eight innings.

Jackson Snell started on the mound for Monte and pitched very well, holding Ottertail Central scoreless until the sixth inning when Ottertail Central put three unearned runs across the plate to take a 3-1 lead. Seth Kuno came on in relief for Snell and got Monte out of the inning with no further damage.
