The winless Thunder Hawks football team headed into their homecoming game last Friday against conference rival Sauk Centre with one thing on their collective minds: winning! The Mainstreeters always play tough; it wasn’t going to be easy, but the Hawks were hungry and fired up from an exciting all-school pep fest earlier in the day.

Sauk Centre received the  opening kick off and, with the help of a couple of big plays, marched the ball down the field and scored a touchdown on a short run. A two point conversion attempt was good, and the Mainstreeters jumped out to an early 8-0 lead.

Undaunted, Monte’s offense scored twice in the first quarter as it’s defense tightened up to stop Sauk Centre drives.

Monte’s first points came after a nice drive to the Sauk Centre goal line. Senior running back Chase Korte powered his way into the end zone on a two yard carry. Selvin Hernandez’s kick was good to make the score 8-7 in favor of the Mainstreeters.

Then, Monte’s defense stopped Sauk Centre on a fourth down attempt and forced the Streeters to turn the ball over on downs.

Monte’s offense broke a big play when senior running back Trent Dreyer out ran the defense down the sideline for a 65 yard TD run. Hernandez’s kick was good, and the Hawks took the lead at 14-8.

Then, near the end of the quarter, the Hawks got the ball back and began moving downfield into Mainstreeter territory as time ran out in the quarter.
