The Montevideo boys basketball team suffered three defeats the past week, including a pair of last-second losses.

The Thunder Hawks, who are 8-9 on the season, have home games against BOLD today (Thursday), Paynes­ville Friday and Lac qui Parle Valley Tuesday.

Morris/CA 68, Monte 40
The Tigers (11-0, 16-0), ranked No. 2 in the state in Class AA, put on an impressive performance on their home court in topping the Thunder Hawks Thursday.

Montevideo had 11 players crack the scoring column, but no one scored more than seven points. Lincoln Arnold had 19 points for the Tigers.

Sam Esboldt’s three-point basket with 1.1 seconds remaining gave Will­mar a 62-61 non-conference win over the Thunder Hawks here Saturday.

Until Esboldt’s last-second heroics, it appeared Montevideo would defeat Willmar for the third straight season.

Neither team led by more than six points in the exciting and well-played contest.

Jake Douglas’ basket tied the score at 59-all with 1:04 to play, and Douglas added two free throws with 39 seconds left to give Montevideo the lead before Esboldt hit the game winner despite being well-guarded.

Brett Bergeson scored a career-high 31 points for the T-Hawks. Taylor Filipek, the Cardinals’ 6-6 senior who has signed with Division I Eastern Kentucky, led Willmar with 27 points.

After rally from an eight-point deficit in the final three minutes, the T-Hawks lost another heartbreaker when Dawson-Boyd’s Matt Anderson hit a 12-foot, off-balance jump shot at the final buzzer to give the Black­jacks a non-conference win here Tuesday.

Montevideo jumped out to a 16-6 lead, but the Blackjacks closed the deficit to one point at halftime.

Montevideo never led in the second half, but the T-Hawks tied it at 60-60 on two Brett Bergeson free throws with 16.5 seconds left.

Colton Vien led Monte­video with 18 points. Andrew Roiger had 23 for the Blackjacks (11-5).
