Beka Schwendemann made a pair of free throws with 3:03 to play in the game Saturday against Windom to become the ninth player in the history of Montevideo basketball to score 1,000 career points.

Schwendemann, a 6-foot senior forward, went into Saturday’s game at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall needing eight points to reach the 1,000 point milestone.

Windom’s zone defense held Schwendemann to just one field goal during the game, but she went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to reach the magic number late in the game.

“When I was a freshman I saw Brook Moseng get her 1,000 and then I thought it was a reachable goal,” said Schwendemann, who was a teammate of Moseng’s during the 2006-07 season.

Schwendemann says her favorite basketball memory was when she was a sixth-grader and hit a shot from half-court to give her traveling team a last-second win over Ortonville.

“She’s obviously got a lot of natural ability,” said Montevideo coach Jamie Harrington. “She maintains such an upbeat attitude. You always see Beka playing with a smile on her face. I think that sets her apart.”

Beka, the daughter of Rob and Karla Schwendemann of Watson, hopes to play basketball at the collegiate level, although she is still undecided on her choice of schools.
