For the first time since 2006, the Montevideo boys swimming and diving team has defeated Melrose/Sauk Centre in a dual meet.

The Thunder Hawks topped the Fusion 101-85 last Thursday in Montevideo.

Unlike most teams, Melrose/Sauk Centre was able to match Montevideo’s depth, but the Thunder Hawks won nine of the 12 events and finished second in five events.

“The first part of the meet was what set the tone,” said Montevideo coach Matt Olson. “Going into the meet we knew we would have a difficult time splitting their unbelievably close depth, so our swimmers chose to drop time and make them chase us.”

The T-Hawks got off to a great start by finishing 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay. Jack Spaeth and Tyler Gort took the top two spots in the 200 IM, and Tommy Payne and Adam Peters were first and second, respectively, in the 50 freestyle.

Kane Glomstad and Andrew Peters picked up key second- and third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle.

Olson said those first four events were key to the final outcome.

Chase Testa broke his own school record in winning the diving competition. Payne and Spaeth won their second individual events of the night, with Payne winning the 100 freestyle and Spaeth taking the backstroke.

Andrew Peters edged teammate Glomstad to win the 500 freestyle, and Gort won the breaststroke.

“It was a very electric meet and a great opportunity for all of our swimmers and divers to be part of it. It was a meet that, on paper, scored out to be tied going into the last event, no matter how we lined up. Our athletes rose to the challenge and defended their pool,” said Olson.

The Thunder Hawks will host Dassel-Cokato today (Thursday) in the final home meet of the season.
