The Montevideo Spartans are one victory away from from advancing to the Region 9 tournament.

The Spartans opened the Canvas Division playoffs with a 4-2 win over Benson Saturday. Morris clinched a berth in the region tournament by beating the Spartans 5-2 Sunday.

Montevideo will host Appleton Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to play Morris Sunday at 1 p.m. at Morris for the Canvas division championship.

The region tournament will be held at Madison, starting Aug. 7.

“We are playing really good baseball right now,” said Spartans manager Brandon Raymo. “We have lost our number one pitcher, Travis Epema, for the year due to arm troubles, so having the high school kids now that Legion is over is a huge help.”
