Dear Dr. June: My boyfriend is smart and handsome but acts crazy if I speak to someone just to be friendly. My high school friends and I joke around when we see each other out at parties or church or just in general. I already told him that Iím not trying to be with anyone else, but this jealousy thing is a bit much. Why do men get so jealous when their girlfriends just talk to another guy?
ó Too Much in Tampa, Florida

Dear Too Much: Agreed. That is too much. Men or anyone usually get jealous due to self-esteem issues and insecurity. He may be smart and handsome; yet, he is not secure enough in himself to let his girlfriend enjoy conversation with old friends. If he canít control his jealousy, this can lead to a very unpleasant situation. So you may have to take action. As the expression goes, actions speak louder than words. Once he realizes you are willing to move on from the relationship because of his jealous nature, one of two things will happen. He will get his act together or he will make a scene. If itís the first then hooray for you. If itís the second, thank God you got out before it was too late. Still, hooray for you.

Ending a toxic relationship

Dear Dr. June: What do I do about a toxic friendship that I would feel bad getting out of because she isnít close with anyone else? I feel horrible because no one else seems to want to be friends with her so she depends on me for everything. Itís stressful but I donít know what to do. ó AY, Ocala, Florida

Dear AY: First thing that came to mind is that she doesnít have friends for a reason. I actually think itís nice of you to befriend her. Hereís the deal though. You cannot be her crutch and youíre not doing her any favors by allowing her to continue to depend on you. Time to have a conversation that starts with thank you for being my friend. Share while you are friends, you have to expand your wings and explore life on your own so youíre backing off. Then do just that. Toxins are poisonous. Save yourself.
