Friday’s banquet for the Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener is sold out as Montevideo and the surrounding area welcome Gov. Mark Dayton and his entourage for the pheasant opener for the second time.

Montevideo hosted the inaugural Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener in 2011 and our area is the first to host the event for a second time.

On Friday at 3 p.m., the governor will participate in the dedication of the new Mills Creek Gun Range, located 1.5 miles north of Montevideo on Highway 29. Also scheduled to speak is Minnesota DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr.

The Montevideo Area Community Band will provide musical entertainment, starting at 2:30 p.m. The high school trapshooting team will be giving demonstrations. The event is open to the public.

Friday’s banquet at American Legion Post 59 is a sellout. The Legion will be closed to the general public until 8 p.m. Speakers, in addition to Dayton and Landwehr, will include Lt. Gov. Tina Smith and John Edman, director of Explore Minnesota.

Emceeing the banquet will be former Montevideo High School graduate John Lauritsen, of WCCO Television. Another former Monte grad, Sarah Hinde, has been helping coordinate the event as Dayton’s director of external affairs.
