Montevideo High School is lucky to welcome four foreign exchange students this year, one of whom is Roos Metselaar.

Roos is from the Netherlands, and her dad’s name is Hans Metselaar and her mom’s name is Irma Huizer. She has one sibling, an 18-year-old brother, Erik Metselaar.

While living in Minnesota, she is staying with Ed and Tammy Picht, along with their three kids, Tierra, Maddie and Wyatt.

“I am so thankful that I can stay with them for my exchange year. We have a lot of fun together,” states Roos.

Roos is staying active at MHS, being a Gold Duster on the dance team and a member in the MHS concert band, where she learned to play the clarinet. Two of Roos’ favorite classes at MHS are band and artistic food and design.

“We don’t have this kind of class back home,” reveals Roos, “so I really enjoy it. Plus I like to cook and bake!”

Roos is also a dancer at her host mom’s studio, Dance Haven. Without a doubt Roos is staying busy here in the United States!

She says there is definitely a difference in the food between the United States and the Netherlands. “My favorite foods in America are chips and salsa and French toast,” Roos comments.

Something that can be quite difficult to get used to when you come to Minnesota is the cold weather.
