A journey always starts with a first step, or in the case of Frank Mammitzsch, hopping on a bicycle and working the pedals. Mammitzsch, who is from Germany, attended Montevideo High School in 2002-2003 as a foreign exchange student. He is currently on a cross country bike tour that began in Boston on April 30 and will end in Seattle sometime in July.
A cross country journey by bike is not an easy undertaking, but Mammitzsch does not consider himself to be a professional bike rider. “I like biking for fun on evenings and weekends,” he said.
When asked why he decided to bike across America, Mammitzsch said, “I like biking and I read about people doing it. It sounded like a nice trip and a good way to see the country.”
Mammitzsch’s route is taking him across the northern part of the United States, and he made a special detour to visit Montevideo. “When I leave today, I will start heading back to my original route which went through Fargo,” he said.
