Former Luther Haven administrator Tamara Noel Borstad, 46, of Appleton, appeared at a plea hearing at Chippewa County District Court in Montevideo last Monday. Borstad pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft- value over $5,000.
She had been accused of using the nursing home’s credit cards, as well as taking cash from a safe, in connection with gambling activities.
According to the original criminal complaint, a credit card statement showed that Borstad had used Luther Haven credit cards on several occasions at Mystic Lake Casino, Jackpot Junction, and Prairies Edge Casino. The total amount charged to the Luther Haven account was $12,940.49.
When the credit card statements came in, Luther Haven employees searched a safe which was in Borstad’s office and discovered that $25,872 in cash was missing.Under terms of the plea agreement reached at last Monday’s hearing, Borstad was sentenced to 150 days in the Chippewa County Jail, with 150 days stayed for 10 years on the condition that restitution payments in the amount of $750 are made in monthly installments, beginning in Jan. of 2019.
The total amount of restitution to be paid by Borstad was set at $42,884.79, which includes $12,940.59 for the credit card charges and $25,872 for the theft of cash. Also included in the restitution order were a $1,000 fine and a $75 Criminal/Traffic surcharge.
Borstad was placed on supervised probation for 10 years and will be monitored by 6W Community Corrections of Chippewa County, and she was ordered by the court to follow all conditions of probation.
Borstad became the administrator of Luther Haven in Nov. of 2017, and was terminated this past June when the theft of funds was discovered.
