A special awards presentation was held at Tuesday evening’s city council meeting. Interim Police Chief Ken Schule presented Citizen Public Service Awards to Jason Sachariason and Daniel Sanborn.

Schule said: “I would like to present Citizen Police Service Awards to two Montevideo Citizens who aided a Montevideo police officer in the arrest of a suspect.

According to Schule, on Jan. 8 of this year officer Carmen Beninga recognized an individual at a local business who had an active warrant for his arrest. “Officer Beninga confirmed the warrant and confronted the individual who refused to cooperate by no listening to commands, but stated he did not want to go back to prison,” said Schule.

Officer Beninga then radioed for assistance and continued to order the individual to place his hands behind his back, which he refused to do.

Schule stated that Jason Sachariason came to Beninga’s assistance, as did Daniel Sanborn. The three of them were then able to take the individual down to the ground when he was handcuffed by Beninga. Officers arrived and the individual was taken to jail.

The suspect was in possession of stolen property that was linked to the recent string of burglaries in town, as well as amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana.
