Robert “Bob” Vernon Swanson, 81, passed away Aug. 23, 2019, peacefully with his family by his side. A funeral service was held on Aug. 29, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Maynard. This very church held countless memories for Bob and his family over the years.
Bob was born Oct. 9, 1937, to Vernon and Helen (Underwood) Swanson in Montevideo. He grew up on the family farm in rural Maynard, which gave him his lifelong love of tractors. He was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Maynard, in May of 1951, alongside two of his brothers. He graduated from Maynard High School in 1955. On Feb. 14, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Carol Spencer. To this union three children were born.
Bobs career was spent working in the Twin Cities, with most of the years living in Cottage Grove. He was employed by American Hoist & Derrick and Dynamic Air before retiring in 1999 and moving to Glenwood, where he still resided.
Bob and Carol valued their time together and certainly maximized it exploring the world. After retirement they spent many winters in Texas. They often travelled with many of their brothers and sisters across the U.S, and even found time to visit their roots in the countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
From random outbursts of craziness to puffs from his pipe, Bob has always been the anchor to our family and will be dearly missed!
Bob was preceded in death by his son, Brad Swanson (2011).
He is survived by his wife Carol; daughters, Tami Dunlap and Traci (and Jason) Tauber; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Swanson; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Dick (and Carol), Dale (and Voni), Jim (and Arlene); his sister Mary (and Brad) Sunderland; sisters-in-law, Sharon (and Mearl) Kibler, Donna (and Duane) Ritter, Jackie (and Orrin) Aune; and several nieces and nephews.
