Darrel Benson, of Montevideo, died Monday, December 27, 2021 at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 84.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Pastor Jeff Fitzkappes officiating.

Visitation will be held Friday, January 7, 2022 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Anderson - TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service to begin at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Darrel Harlan Benson was born April 3, 1937 at home in Baxter Township, Lac qui Parle County, MN the son of Alton and Gladys (Engesmoe) Benson. He graduated from Dawson High School in 1955 and then attended Minneapolis Business College where he graduated with an accounting degree. He was united in marriage with Ruby Bergeson on July 11, 1959. He served in the MN Army National Guard for six years. Darrel worked at First National Bank in Montevideo until 1970. In 1973, he started in the insurance business and retired in 1999 when he sold the insurance business to his son, Leon. Darrel and Ruby moved to their lake home at Maple Lake near Alexandria. Darrel was active and served on many boards including: Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Hometown Community Bank, Montevideo Jaycees, March of Dimes, Chippewa County Fair Assn., Lac qui Parle Zoning Board, and the church council at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Darrel was very involved and an important member of Forada Days and Montevideo Fiesta Days for many years. While living at the lake he donated much time to the city of Forada and was the secretary of the Forada Lions Club.

Darrel was a very caring, honest and kind man and will be missed by many.

He is survived by a daughter, Lana Heggestad of Granite Falls; a son, Leon (Cindy) Benson of Montevideo; five grandchildren: Nathan Stangeland, Kayla Perrier, Natasha Heggestad, Chantel Heggestad, and Brooklynn Benson; a great-grandson, William Perrier; two sisters: Shirlene (Paul) Sorby of Dawson and Diane (Denny) Loose of Montevideo; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Elsie Thoms of Waconia.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Ruby in 2015; a daughter, Lisa in 2021; and a great-grandson, Brayden Bouressa in 2015.
