Marilyn DeGrote

Marilyn DeGrote, 88, of Clara City passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at the Clara City Care Center in Clara City. Memorial Mass was held Monday, May 10, 2021 at 11 a.m. at St. Clara Catholic Church with interment following at the church cemetery.

Marilyn Marie DeGrote was born on February 19, 1933 in Crate Township.  She was the daughter of George and Eleanor (Norman) Schoen. Marilyn was confirmed at St. Clara Catholic Church in Clara City. She attended parochial school at St. Clara and then went to Clara City High School where she graduated.

On January 7, 1953, Marilyn married Harm DeGrote at St. Clara Catholic Church while Harm was on furlough from the Army. Together they were blessed with seven children – Vicky, Valerie, Steve, Jeff, Becky, Lisa and Kathy. Marilyn set the standard of “mothering” very high.  She raised her children with love and worked along her husband on the Schoen family farm.

Marilyn’s life was dedicated to serving her family, church and community. She was a parish historian, lector, usher, mission group chairman, CCW member and was recognized as the 1992 New Ulm Catholic Woman of the Year and in 1994 received the Bishops Service Award.  Marilyn was a member of the nursing home auxiliary, the Homemaker’s Club, the Bell Bloomers Band, Blood Mobile Volunteer, 4-H Leader, a Meals on Wheels volunteer and was a 25 year Rice Hospital volunteer.

Marilyn enjoyed camping, reading, crocheting, quilting, crafting, baking, playing Bingo and the card club. She cherished the trips she made with Harm to visit her children and the bus trips to various places. Marilyn loved to laugh and bring joy to others. She thoroughly enjoyed dotting on her grandchildren and being an only child, she came to love every minute she spent with her family and friends.

Marilyn passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 while surrounded by both family and the wonderful and caring staff of the Clara City Care Center. She reached the age of 88 years, two months and 15 days.
