The Montevideo Post 59 Legion baseball team travelled to Omaha, Neb., to compete in the Battle of Omaha tournament this past weekend.

The Montevideo Post 59 Legion baseball team travelled to Omaha, Neb., to compete in the Battle of Omaha  tournament this past weekend.

The team’s first game was last Thursday against Elk­horn, Neb. Elkhorn quickly jumped out on top in the first inning, scoring five runs, and adding three more in the fourth inning.

Monte scored runs in both the third and sixth innings. Markus Kranz had a single and a triple for Monte. The final score was 8-2 in favor of Elkhorn, who was Nebraska’s state high school baseball champs this year.

Monte’s second game of the day with Omaha North proved to be a see-saw battle. Monte scored one run in the top of the first inning, but Omaha North answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the third, Montevideo scored twice to take a 3-2 lead. Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Omaha scored three times to take a 5-3 lead.

Monte got one back in the top of fifth, but Omaha answered in their half of the  sixth with one run to extend their lead to 6-4.

Monte then came back to score two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6, but Omaha managed to put one run across in the bottom the inning to end the game.

For the game, Monte batters pounded out 12 hits, with Markus Kranz going 3-for-3, and Bryce Maurice went 3-for-4. Monte was also aggressive on the base path, stealing a total of six bases.
