Last Wednesday, the Thunder Hawks hosted the Osakis Silverstreaks in the final game of the regular season. The game was a good one, and wasn’t decided until the final minutes of the game as Osakis scored a late touchdown to win by a score of 30-28.
The game got off to a rough start for Montevideo. Osakis’ potent offense scored 18 unanswered points in the first quarter before Monte found the end zone late in the quarter.
Thunder Hawks running back Trent Dreyer found a hole in the Silverstreaks defense and sprinted for an electrifying 48 yard TD run. Selvin Hernandez’s extra point attempt was good and the Hawks trailed Osakis 18-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, a Montevideo turnover led to an Osakis touchdown on a one yard run. Monte’s defense would go on to hold Osakis scoreless for the rest of the quarter.
Trailing 24-7, Dreyer scored his second touchdown of the game on a seven yard run up the middle. Hernandez’s kick was good to make the score 24-14.
Monte’s defense again stopped the Silverstreaks to give the ball back to the offense. Quarterback Tyler Blue found receiver Jackson Snell wide open in the middle of the field for a 37 yard touchdown reception. Hernandez’s extra point attempt was good, and the Thunder Hawks found themselves trailing Osakis by a score of only 24-21 at the half.
The momentum was still with the Hawks at the beginning of the third quarter. Monte’s offense put together another nice drive which was capped off by Trent Dreyer’s third TD of the game, a seven yard dash around the corner. Hernandez’s kick was good, and Monte took the lead at 28-24.
Monte’s defense did a great job of holding Osakis scoreless through the rest of the third quarter and for most of the fourth quarter, as well.
However, a Hawks turnover late in the game led to an Osakis touchdown when running back Luke Imdieke turned the corner and sprinted downfield for a big 53 yard touchdown. The extra point failed, and the Silverstreaks led by two at 30-28.
The Thunder Hawks had one more chance to score with under two minutes to play in the game. Tyler Blue and Trent Dreyer led Monte deep into the Silverstreaks end of the field. Monte’s hopes of a last minute score were dashed when a sideline pass attempt by Blue was picked off by Osakis.
