Weekly COVID roundup: 9 new St. Cloud area deaths, 1,140 new cases reported in past week

ST. CLOUD — Nine more people living in the St. Cloud area were reported dead by the Minnesota Department of Health this week due to complications related to COVID-19. The St. Cloud area also saw 1,140 new cases of COVID.

The list of COVID-related deaths includes six Sherburne County residents, including one resident in their early 50s and one in their early 60s. There was also one death reported in Benton County and two in Stearns.

State-wide there were 15,756 new cases of COVID-19 reported, and 93 total people were reported dead by the state in the last week, according to data collected by MDH.

Stearns County saw 568 new cases, Sherburne County saw 338 new cases and Benton County saw 234 new cases.

In total, 242 people have died of COVID-19 in Stearns County, 106 people have died in Sherburne County and 102 people have died in Benton County since March 2020.

Here are the latest totals as of Friday: 

  • Minnesota: 697,182 cases and 8,076 deaths.
  • Stearns County: 25,428 cases and 242 deaths. 
  • Benton County: 6,653 cases and 102 deaths.
  • Sherburne County: 13,840 cases and 106 deaths.

As of Wednesday more than 3.2 million people in the state over the age of 12 in Minnesota have completed their vaccine series, according to MDH.

Here's the vaccine summaries as of Wednesday:

  • Minnesota: 68.3% of all residents 12+ are fully vaccinated.
  • Stearns County: 51.8% of residents 12+ are fully vaccinated.
  • Benton County: 50.7% of residents 12+ are fully vaccinated.
  • Sherburne County: 52.8% of residents 12+ are fully vaccinated.

Globally, 44.3% of the world's population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to Our World in Data. 6.1 billion doses have been administered globally, and only about 2% of people in low-income countries have received at least one dose.
