City of Granite Falls and Yellow Medicine County rolls out new recycling cart program

Lyon County Environmental Department

Together with The Recycling Partnership, Yellow Medicine and Chippewa County, West Central Sanitation and the City of Granite Falls recycling carts will be delivered the week of December 27th. The 95-gallon carts will begin arriving the week of December 27th and will be delivered to only those residents in the City of Granite Falls residing in Yellow Medicine County and Chippewa County. The carts will be delivered to residents, single, family homes, and apartment buildings with six or fewer apartments. These carts will replace the current system of containers used for residential recycling and will come with wheels for easy maneuvering and with attached lids to keep recyclables dry and secure.

Yellow Medicine County applied for and received grants from The Recycling Partnership, a nonprofit organization that works with communities nationwide to transform their recycling programs. The City of Granite Falls was selected to receive grant support because of its dedication to advancing recycling in the community. The grant provided financial support, which assisted Yellow Medicine County to purchase the new carts and includes funding for education and outreach about the new collection process.

The City of Granite Falls asks that residents continue to do their part by placing only items accepted for recycling in their carts including glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans, food and beverage cartons, paper products (including newspaper and flattened cardboard), and empty plastic bottles, containers, and tubs. To help limit trash in the recycling, only place materials accepted for recycling that are clean and dry into the cart-loose and not bagged. Some items that cannot be recycled include plastic bags, paper towels, electronics, batteries, and clothing. These items often are mixed into recycling carts because of “wishcycling”, or the hope that they can be recycled. While, well-intentioned, non-recyclable items cause serious issues.

Residents are welcome to keep their current bins for other household uses or additional storage. For more information on what should and should not go into the cart, visit www.ym.gov/recycling-info or https://www.granitefalls.com/community/recycling_guides or call Stephanie at the Lyon County Environmental Department at (507) 532-1307. Recyling pickup will be every other Friday starting January 7th, 2022.
