Live Well, Age Wisely: Gratitude for Volunteers…
The impact that the volunteers at Prairie Five have on the quality of life in their communities cannot be overstated! Each day, the home-delivered meals program volunteers ensure that older adults not only have access to nourishing, healthy meals but are able to continue living independently in their own homes. A 92-year-old remarked, “I gave up cooking and my kids aren’t around so if it weren’t for this service, I don’t know what I’d do.”

Memory Care Corner: Frontotemporal Dementia – Part 2…
Last time we learned that there are five main types of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The two most common are the behavioral variant FTD (that we learned about last time) and a second called primary progressive aphasia. The other 3 variants are not very common, however, are seen from time to time.

Live Well, Age Wisely: Medicare Fraud Prevention…
Can you believe that fraud, errors, and abuse cost Medicare more than $60 billion last year? Medicare fraud is one of the most rampant forms of fraud in the US. There are a variety of ways it is committed and ultimately all taxpayers end up paying for the dishonesty of others. The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) began in 1997 and they provide valuable tips for preventions and ideas for what to do if you believe you’ve been scammed. The following suggestions come from their web site at smpresource.org.

Memory Care Corner: Fish and Frontotemporal Dementia…
When people hear the word dementia, they immediately think of Alzheimer’s Disease – and rightly so, as Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of dementia. However, as we have been discussing, Alzheimer’s Disease is not the only fish in the sea! Today, we are going to learn a little about Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).

Live Well, Age Wisely: How do you handle stress?
What caught my attention most during the Medicare Open Enrollment last fall didn’t have anything to do with insurance coverage options. During the nearly two-month period, I met with hundreds of people and almost all expressed concerns or anxiety about the current state of affairs, the direction in which the country was headed, and what the future might hold. It didn’t matter which side of the political aisle, just about everyone seemed to feel similarly and share in a larger sense of unease.

Memory Care Corner: MAMLN Spring Educational Event…
Through my recent articles, we’ve been learning about the different “looks” of dementia. This week, however, we are going to shift gears so I can share information with you about a great opportunity that I wouldn’t want you to miss!
Faith Column: Love for the Community …
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

Live Well, Age Wisely: Discounts and Money Savers with Prairie Five…
Did you know that Prairie Five offers tax preparation services? We have tax clinics available in several locations in the five counties we cover (Big Stone, Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, Swift, Yellow Medicine) provided through our partnership with the Internal Revenue Service’s VITA program. VITA is the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and the initiative was designed to support free tax preparation services. If your annual income is less than $84,000 (with wages paid by an employer; self-employment of less than $10,000 only), then you qualify for this free service. Tax services are available by appointment only and while there are still spots available, I’d suggest calling the Tax Clinic Line at 320-226-8118 soon to get yours reserved.
Faith Column: Loving Others as Jesus Loves You…
“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34)

Memory Care Corner: Fish and Dementia – part 2…
In my last article, I shared about the different varieties of fish - and how each have their own “look.” The same is true about dementia. Dementia can present itself differently depending on the type and what part of the brain is being affected.
