Community Center Open House held

The Community Center held an open house last week. On hand were several speakers including Community Center member Marie Pederson. Along with Pederson, other speakers included: Evonne Smith (Happy Together; a group for individuals who live alone.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is mental health month, a time to raise awareness of the importance of striving for good mental health. Our head is connected to the rest of our body, and when our physical health isn’t great, it impacts our mental health, and when our mental health isn’t great, it impacts our physical health. It is evidenced by the fact that people with diabetes, heart disease, and even COVID have higher rates of depression. A mental illness or poor mental health symptoms can include stomach aches, pounding heart, and muscle pain. So, if we want to be healthy, we must also focus on our mental health.

Adopt a Highway volunteers remove 38,500 bags of trash from highways in 2022

The Minnesota Department of Transportation thanks the thousands of Adopt a Highway volunteers who helped to keep roadsides clean and free of litter in 2022 by picking up more than 38,500 bags of trash from highway ditches, and MnDOT invites more Minnesotans to join the program. Statewide, more than 1,860 Adopt a Highway groups volunteered their time for well over 88,000 hours collectively last year. With at least 900 roadway sections currently available for adoption statewide, MnDOT welcomes more groups to volunteer.

A.R.O. moves to new location

Last week, Advanced Recovery Opportunities (A.R.O.) moved to a new location. The recovery group was formerly housed in the downtown Montevideo building known as the Old National Bank building. They have now moved to Main Street, and are located at 115 N 1st St.

Board hears report on 2022 EDA activity

At Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Chippewa County Board of Commissioners, Montevideo City Manger Robert Wolfington and Community Development Coordinator Jack Gottfried were in attendance to provide updates to the board. The County has traditionally provided some funds towards Economic Development, and so Gottfried presented an overview of the work the Economic Development Administration has been working on over the last year. The EDA is made up of seven different board members who have been working on a variety of projects, including the Thunder Hawk apartments that were constructed in the early part of 2022. “We heard back from the developers that they are interested in doing another addition to that,” Gottfried said.
