EagleCam pair lays eggs

The pair of eagles in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Nongame Wildlife Program EagleCam nest are incubating two eggs. The first egg was laid on Feb. 15 and the second on Feb. 18. No additional eggs are expected. Eggs incubate for 34 to 39 days, with both adult eagles trading food, incubation and nest protection duties. This season is the 10th year of the EagleCam, a popular annual livestream of a bald eagle nest in Minnesota. Fifteen chicks have successfully fledged from the nest in the last decade. The current female in the nest has been there for three years and, with her mates, has produced seven eggs and raised five chicks to fledging. More information about the Nongame Wildlife Program and the livestream can be found on the Eagle-Cam page of the DNR website (mndnr.gov/ EagleCam).

“Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!” (Psalm 95:1a)

Vicar of Healing Waters Lutheran Parish, Lutheran Seminary Student My husband and I love rocks! That may sound strange, but we see so much beauty in rocks. It could be the color, the size, the shape, even the mixture of how an individual rock is made up. It’s kind of funny that of all the different billions or trillions of rocks there are on earth, there are only three main types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Each of these types are formed by different processes that take place, like melting, cooling, eroding, compacting, or deforming. Agates are our favorite “rocks”, but agates are not classified in one of these three main types of rocks. Agates are considered mineraloids and they form naturally when an empty pocket inside a host metamorphic rock fills layer-by-layer with microcrystals.

Council censures Sulflow

At Monday evening’s City Council meeting, the Montevideo City Council moved to formally censure council member Steve Sulflow. Sulflow pled guilty to the charge, and received a stay of adjudication, meaning the charge will not be on his record as long as he follows the terms of probation.

Former Fine Arts Center building comes down

For months, the former Fine Arts Center building has been under preparations for demolition with work being done to clean out hazardous materials from inside including asbestos abatement, removal of light ballasts that contain PCBs, fluorescent bulbs, mercury switches and gauges and more. The building was slated for demolition after issues involving mold and deterioration were deemed to be irreparable. In late summer, dirt piles were built up against the building to be used for excavators to climb up to start the demolition from the top down. That demolition began late last week, continuing this week. Once the building is gone, the dirt used in the pile for the excavators will serve as ground fill to bring the property back to ground level. The district’s goal is to see that land developed in a way that will match the surrounding neighborhood.
