Council approves proposed 2023 street improvements

At Monday evening’s regular meeting of the Montevideo City Council, City Engineer Mike Amborn presented the proposed Street Utility Construction projects for the 2023 season. Five projects are identified in the report for 2023, with a total estimated cost of $2,232,500.

Shourds appointed to school board

At last week’s regular meeting of the Montevideo School Board, Dustin Shourds was appointed to fill the school board vacancy that was created when board member Kelly Snell took the position of Community Education Coordinator within the district. The position was accepted by Snell within a time frame that meant it was too late to take her name off the ballot before elections.

Work of Justin Beck to exhibit in Montevideo this winter

Photographer Justin Beck will be the February artist exhibiting in Java River. Beck hails from the Hutchinson area and is a self-taught photographer. He started working in photography in 2016 as a hobby. He says he initially struggled to find subject matter, but through social media and photography books he discovered the aesthetic of “decay”. He took that focus and brought it with him to begin capturing older, run-down landscapes of rural communities.

The season of Advent brings great joy

”And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.’” We recently got the good news of the arrival of our first grandchild, and I can say it certainly caused great joy among those who heard it - what surprised me was how joyful people outside our immediate family felt!

Montevideo approved for Minnesota Main Street Economic Revitalization funds

A state grant program born from the COVID-19 pandemic, and now in its second round, will soon benefit Montevideo’s Main Street businesses. Through a partnership with Southwest Initiative Foundation, the City of Montevideo, was granted $371,417 to be used for improvement projects in the downtown corridor.

Over $26,000 awarded in grants at Montevideo Area Community Foundation banquet

Monday evening, a crowd gathered in Table 212’s banquet room for the annual Montevideo Area Community Foundation Awards Banquet. The Montevideo Area Community Foundation was established in 1993 with the mission to nurture philanthropy and provide opportunities for current and future generations to enhance their quality of life in the Montevideo area. Originally, the group was formed to create the Community Center, then began giving out grants in 2003, giving away $4,500 that year. Before Monday night’s banquet, the foundation has given away a total of $259,984.80 over the years since.
