Meet Dinosaurs! event held at Montevideo Public Library

The Montevideo Public Library held a Meet Dinosaurs! event on Saturday, November 5th. The event was brought to life by Curt Struz, of Struz Entertainment, based out of Wisconsin. Kids and adults packed the library to its gills. Struz brought some of the dinosaurs to life, including a baby triceratops, velociraptor, and a baby t-rex in an egg. Funding for this event was made possible by Legacy, which is a tax levy by the state of Minnesota that gives funds to rural libraries, such as in Montevideo, so they may have more access to things like the arts, education, and historical events (such as dinosaurs). The idea for the Meet Dinosaurs! event came during a head librarians meeting that the library’s head librarian Larissa Schwenk attended. A fellow librarian had used Struz previously and recommended him to Schwenk. Struz is anticipated to be returning with his dinosaurs again next August.

We celebrated another week without any snow. We sure could use more than a little rain, though. Never satisfied. Too little of this. Too much of that. But. I’m really trying to just be thankful for what I have. I guess I’ll have to continue working on that.

Council discusses new PFAS testing requirements from the state

One of the topics of discussion at Monday evening’s City Council meeting was consideration of approval of a memorandum of understanding with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for the monitoring of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances - otherwise known as PFAS. According to fda.gov, PFAS are, “A diverse group of human-made chemicals used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products. PFAS do not easily breakdown and some types have been shown to accumulate in the environment and in our bodies.” The FDA also notes that exposure to the chemicals have been linked to serious health effects. “The City is required to monitor PFAS along with a number of other tests done to ensure the safety of the water system in the community,” noted City Manager Robert Wolfington.

As we think about being thankful, I am thankful for a warm house and a place to call home. However, not everyone has this. I have been on the St. Martin’s Board, which is a committee that is supported by area churches to help those in need. Normally, we have donations around that $10,000.00 mark and use this to help people with housing, heat, lights, water and all those things that make a place home. We realized however that there is a bigger need and that is for Transitional Housing. We now have a committee of Montevideo residents working on the issues of homelessness. Now, you do not see people out on the street corner with little signs like in the twin cities, but we do have people living in cars and in warm open buildings at night and sleeping on friends’ couches. We have found working with Prairie Five that nearly every working day of every month they work with someone who is homeless or facing homelessness. We hope to help that as this community group moves forward.
