Mild temps ahead for the weekend

My wife and I made a trip up north to see Michael Bolton at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs in Onamia on Saturday. We witnessed all the fall colors along the way. Some areas were very vibrant still, but other areas have seen their peak for the season.

Food shelf fundraising concert at Hawk Creek Lutheran

The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra, under the direction of Cindy Martinson, will present a fundraising concert to benefit the Neighbors United Resource Center Food Shelf. Titled “A Celebration of Life”, this program of uplifting choral and orchestral music will include a variety of pieces, ranging from “Joyful, Joyful” from the film Sister Act Two, to the acclaimed “Indodana”, along with “Swing Low/ Swing Down Chariot” by the men singers, “Arise my Soul, Arise” by the women, the first movement of Dan Forrest’s “Jubilate Deo”, Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” and more.

M State selected as new host of regional Small Business Development Center

Minnesota State Community and Technical College has been chosen as the new host of the West Central Minnesota Small Business Development Center for a threeyear period beginning January 1, 2023. M State was selected for its proven commitment to business development, existing resources, large geographic and demographic footprint, and established partnerships with regional businesses and industry.

Premiere of Compass’s “Birkey’s Brain” draws a crowd

Pioneer PBS’s producer of Compass Amanda Anderson was approached by Dr. Tom Birkey, and his wife Doris along with the Montevideo Area Memory Loss Network (MAMLN) with the idea to produce a program about the Birkeys’ experiences with Alzheimer’s disease some time ago. Right away, Anderson knew that the idea fit in perfectly with the type of programming Compass has been striving to achieve, utilizing solutions journalism for story- telling. Thus began an effort over the summer to film and edit “Birkey’s Brain”, a program that premiered for the first time last week at the Montevideo Millennium Theater, which donated the space for the event, in partnership with MAMLN and Pioneer PBS. “It was really conceived from Dr. Birkey. He wanted to create a space where people were having positive conversations about Alzheimer’s Disease and living well with Dementia,” Anderson says.

Montevideo households prepare for Halloween

Throughout town, some houses have been given the Halloween treatment with makeshift graveyards, large blow-ups, huge spiderwebs, lots of orange string lights, and pumpkins galore, people are ready for Spooky season and the throngs of trick-or-treaters that will be out later this month.

SMSU invites students to apply for free during Minnesota State Month

Students interested in continuing their education with Southwest Minnesota State University can apply for free during Minnesota State Month. In an effort to make college more accessible, the standard processing fee is waived for applications submitted anytime during the month of October.
