Church is more than a building

Church is more than a building and worship is more than what is done in a church. Being a part of a church can be a fascinating struggle between wondering why more people don’t come and resenting those who use the building simply as a pretty backdrop for a wedding. There is also the temptation to treat the church building as a touchstone or museum of a bygone era: When people return for a funeral or to worship on Christmas Eve or Easter, they are comforted by the fact that everything is essentially the same as when they attended as children. For liturgical churches, the services themselves can be the same way. Before I became a pastor, my favorite thing about worship is that, other than sitting and standing at the right times, nothing was expected of me. The liturgy, the hymns, and the sermon served as a comforting background hum as I allowed my mind to roam. While there is great comfort in this familiarity, I sometimes wonder if comfort hasn’t become one of the greatest obstacles to faith.

Lac qui Parle Mission Sunday to be held July 10

The Chippewa County Historical Society will host the 64th annual Lac qui Parle Mission Sunday on Sunday, July 10, 2022. The day will begin with a worship service at 10:30 a.m. led by Dr. Reverend Clifford Canku, and will feature the Dakota Ascension Choir and the hymn “Lac qui Parle”, which was composed by Joseph Renville and inspired by Jeremiah 10:12-13. This hymn, which has been in the Dakota Odowan since 1846, was translated into English by Philip Frazier, a third generation Dakota pastor in the Congregational church. It is perhaps the most widely known Christian Indian hymn in the United States, a legacy to all people from the Santee Dakota, who still sing it in their native language.
