Superintendent’s Column: Is Failure Something to Fear?
I find it interesting that the greatest hitter in major league baseball history has a career batting average of .366. Almost ⅔ of Ty Cobb’s plate appearances ended up with him walking back to the dugout. That means that the best hitter to ever step to the plate failed to accomplish his goal of getting a base hit almost ⅔ of the time. By failing almost ⅔ of the time Ty Cobb earned his way into the baseball hall of fame and received a record 222 out of 226 possible votes.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources The weather so far in April has been anything but consistent and the same can be said for the ice-out status of Minnesota’s waterways. Knutson Farms expands beef sales to local restaurant menu
Randy Knutson worked alongside his father Lowell since the age of 14, helping out part-time on the family farm to raise cattle. The farm, purchased in 1960, is where Randy now works full time to raise cattle for beef with some assistance from his brother and a neighbor. It wasn’t what Randy always thought he would be doing. Lowell purchased the farm in 1960 and raised beef cattle until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. Doctors told Lowell he could no longer work outside, and so Randy stepped in to take the reins. Shortly before Lowell passed in October of 2014, he asked Randy if he would continue to care for the cattle, but Randy was still unsure. Until one day, as he stood in one of the cattle lots in a snow storm looking over the cattle bunk, he realized that continuing the family tradition was what he would do. “The snow was drifting up over the cattle bunk where the cattle always stand to eat. It was getting buried in the snow. I was sitting there thinking, and I grabbed my cell phone and called my banker and said I’m going to buy 75 cattle,” he says. “There was a long hesitation and then he says, you know what happens when you start that? I said, yeah, you don’t stop. My father worked all his life for that setup, and I just couldn’t let it sit empty. Couldn’t do it.”

Nettingham travels to Boston Marathon, dedicates run to the local community
Shi-Quan Nettingham spent his first winter in Minnesota after moving from Las Vegas a little over a year ago running the frigid prairie to train for his long-time goal of running in the Boston Marathon. Nettingham, the Sports Director at KDMA, has been running for nearly 13 years, starting out with track and cross country in high school. It wasn’t his intention, originally, to become so involved in running, as at the time, basketball was his preferred sport. He says he used running as a way to stay in shape in the off-season, but soon discovered a love for the sport. “I kind of just fell in love with it. It’s a healthy lifestyle, and really something that became kind of an addiction,” he says.

Norby publishes eighth book in a series based in Montevideo
Arthur Norby was born on Christmas Day, 1937 in the Montevideo Hospital. Being raised in Montevideo, he carries many memories of what the town once was, recalling various elements of the community that no longer exist, such as the shoreline of the river being located much closer to downtown than it was today. It is those memories that inspired a series of mysteries set in and around Montevideo that he has penned over the years. The series, titled Tom Hall Mysteries, is comprised of seven novels with the eighth in production currently.
