The Thunder Hawk Knowledge

The Thunder Hawk Knowledge Bowl team of Tyson Quigley, Andrew Soden, Thomas Philaya, Alan Esparza and Logan Olson qualified last week for the State Knowledge Bowl Tournament with a 2nd place finish. Coach Shawn Aker says, “Our season has been one of success for both varsity and junior knowledge bowl. Our junior high teams placed in the top spots numerous times. Our varsity teams were very competitive with a number of top-three finishes during the year as well. Our knowledge bowl participants are great kids and represent our school very well. I am excited to see how they do at the state competition.” The team will participate at the state competition on April 7th & 8th in Brainerd. Photo Submitted

First Congregational – a Church in the process of discernment

The First Congregational United Church of Christ of Montevideo, Minnesota will turn 150 years old this year. It is a church at the crossroads. It is not the first time the church has been at a crossroads. This has occurred many times in the history of the church. An interesting statistic is that the lifespan of most churches is between 70 and 100 years. We have surpassed that expectation by at least 50 years. The church has been an important part of the Montevideo community going all the way back to the founding of Windom College. The church has a mission minded social justice ministry and many programs benefiting the community were begun by members of this church. Many boards both private and public have been personed by members of the First Congregational UCC. We have a proud history and like so many other mainline churches we have declining membership and resources. This became even more apparent and critical during the pandemic. In the United States the number of churchgoers has steadily dropped over the past few decades. The pandemic accelerated that fall. In-person church attendance has dropped by 30 to 50% since the beginning of the pandemic and while some of those churchgoers are gradually coming back it is not expected that all will. Most churches will permanently keep their online services. Some churches, as our church has, have gone to a service that includes discussion by the congregants who attend. Other churches are looking at worship that moves outside of the church building, possibly in people’s homes to attract people who feel more comfortable in a more informal setting and smaller groups. These are just some of the ways churches are attempting to reach their congregations and to attract more members.

City Council hears student proposal for promotional video

At the regular monthly meeting of the Montevideo City Council, the students in Mr. Vik’s 4th grade special projects class were in attendance to present their idea for producing a tourism video to the Council. Previously, the group approached the School Board at a meeting in February to request permission from the board to approach the council. The students took turns speaking, noting their goals to make Montevideo a better place to live, and to produce the film to be placed on the schools website, and perhaps aired at the theater in town to highlight all the community has to offer. The goal for the projects completion is near the end of May. The council motioned to approve the student’s proposal.

Minnesota StarWatch March 2022

As its namesake month begins, Mars glimmers below brilliant Venus in the predawn sky. To the right (south) of the planets sits the Teapot of Sagittarius, while the curved Teaspoon of stars hangs above and between the Teapot and the planets. Moving south again, look for the sinuous form of Scorpius and its red heart, Antares. Mars inches upward all month long, and Saturn climbs over the horizon in midmonth. The ringed planet passes below Venus between the 27th and 28th, and ends March below and between its two fellow planets. A waning moon visits Antares on the 23rd, then sails toward the planets. On the 28th, a scrawny old crescent moon rises below the three planets. But to see all four objects, you’ll have to look soon after moonrise, or the sun will have washed out at least some of the planets. In the evening sky, the large knot of bright winter constellations makes its last stand in March. If you haven’t seen them, look to the south to southwest at nightfall. Enjoy Sirius, in Canis Major, the big dog, at the bottom of the group, then look up to brilliant Capella, at the top in Auriga, the charioteer. The starry assemblage is so tall, you’ll have to lean your head back to see Capella. March’s full moon shines the night of the 17th-18th from below the tail of Leo, the lion. As the night goes on, the moon and the lion seem to drive the winter constellations westward.

News from Milan

I do believe that spring is coming. We’ve had a couple nice days amongst the nastier ones. I think we dodged a bullet after the weatherman predicted freezing rain and prodigious quantities of snow for out area Saturday. I think I only got a light dusting of snow, less than an inch. But now if some brave soul could find the switch for the wind machine and turn it off, I would be ever so grateful.

Taterpie’s Sweet Treats launches at Java River

Taylor Patton Holien has always enjoyed baking, having spent time with her grandmother baking as a child, and baking more extravagant cakes and such for birthdays for family members as she got older. “It was always something that I liked to do and then I just kind of grew from there,” she says. “I would have people reach out to me and I’ve done cakes for birthdays and things like that.”
