Event held in honor of Jepma
On Saturday, the Granite Falls American Legion Post #69 held a special afternoon into evening long event in memory of former manager Rob Jepma. The day included a line-up of musical performances, silent auction, and appetizers. Proceeds from the silent auction benefit Jepma’s family. Jepma passed away unexpectedly in January. He dedicated over 25 years to the Montevideo Fiesta Days celebration, earning two Commodore Awards.

Can you believe that fraud, errors, and abuse cost Medicare more than $60 billion last year? Medicare fraud is one of the most rampant forms of fraud in the US. There are a variety of ways it is committed and ultimately all taxpayers end up paying for the dishonesty of others. The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) began in 1997 and they provide valuable tips for preventions and ideas for what to do if you believe you’ve been scammed. Annual event provides opportunity for local students to experience agriculture
On March 12th, the annual Ag in the Classroom event was held at the Minnesota West campus in Granite Falls. Each year in March, Yellow Medicine County Farm Bureau hosts the event that allows for 4th grade students from area schools to gather with local commodity groups, electric industry representatives and farm safety instructors. This year, seven schools including Montevideo, Lakeview and YME attended, bringing more than 300 students to the venue to meet with the five commodity groups. Each group hosts a 20 minute session of educational information.
Prairie Five RIDES announces service change
Last week, Prairie Five RIDES made an announcement that they will be discontinuing the Montevideo Route Bus due to low ridership. The decision does not affect the ability for those in need of transportation services to to schedule rides on the City Buses.
School board hears updates on plans for 2025-26 school year
At Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Montevideo Board of Education, Montevideo High School Principal Tanya Maethner submitted a report to the board, highlighting registration efforts for the next school year. “Registration is a time-consuming and sometimes stressful process, for both students and staff, but it’s also a fun puzzle to put together,” Maethner said. Meetings have been going on throughout the last month with staff, presentations to students in grades 8th-11th, and individual meetings with students during advisory time to work on registrations for the 2025-26 school year.
Landscape paintings featured in current exhibit
The current featured artist exhibiting on the walls inside Java River Coffee House is Patrick Spence, of Montevideo, featuring landscape paintings.

Big fluctuations in temperatures
It was a great weekend and early start to this week! We had record and near record high temperatures on Monday as temps climbed into the 60s and 70s!
Rainfall monitoring network seeks volunteers
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ State Climatology Office is seeking rainfall monitors for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. The network includes more than 20,000 volunteers nationwide who measure precipitation in their backyards using a standard 4-inch diameter rain gauge.
