I had long considered myself what would be described today as an “old school” South Dakota Moderate Democrat with my maternal side of the family especially having deep roots in the state party with volunteering and also being devout Roman Catholics. Many of us including myself were educated in Catholic schools taught by priests along with Presentation and Benedictine nuns who to me epitomized service to others.

For those of us whose tomatoes were green all summer long, we are able to finally rejoice this first week of autumn as our plants have finally decided to “glow” red -perhaps a serious blush because they were so late? I’ve put up more cans of tomato sauce in the last week than I had red tomatoes on the vine on Labor Day. Maybe I should be thanking the beginning of autumn/ fall for that? After all, it is the season of the harvest!

Beyond Reason
Time After Time The funny thing about time is it’s always something I wish I had more of but the moment I have some actual free time on my hands, I have no idea what to do with it. I mean, where do I start? I could use my time to learn a new language.

When I recently interviewed Troy Huntley about his North American Sturgeon Championship win, he mentioned that the competition was a lot of fun, and suggested I should try it sometime. I had to point out that I haven’t been fishing since I was a child, and likely wouldn’t even remember how the whole thing works.

Live Well, Age Wisely:
Previously, I wrote about some of the changes to Part D coverage that will result from the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. A couple more were highlighted in an email I received from the Senior LinkAge Line and I’d like to share them with you.

In gathering info for another writing project, I compiled a list of interesting “nature notes” about whitetail deer: As we approach the changing colors of autumn, the deer are changing colors, too. The reds of their reddish-brown summer coats are turning gray - this color change is due to the change in their exposure to sunlight (I would think the duller winter colors of their surroundings would cause the change as well).

As we near the best season of all (fall), I find myself wanting to spend more time outdoors and exploring before we lose the chance to winter. So when I had a day off over the weekend and realized that it was going to be my only day off until Christmas with all of the photography sessions booked, the season’s sports, council and school board meetings, etc, etc, I thought it would be the perfect time to take my youngest child on her first trip to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. I’m not a big fan of the event, but I do believe it’s something everyone should experience at least once. Mostly it’s about the people watching, and all of the costumes, and acting that happens throughout the event.
